Survived Another Birthday. Now What?

Sunday, August 30, 2009

I usually spend my birthday (yes, I'm a Leo) doing something that marks the day. For the past few years, I had spent it hiking and climbing to the tops of various mountains in the Sierras: Round Top, Half Dome, Mount Tallac.  Here's a picture from last year:

Here's a picture from last year

As you can tell, sometime it's worth the blisters. Well, this year, that was the plan, too--until the night before my hiking buddy took an electric drill and accidentally drilled it through his hand. The rest of the night and early morning was spent in the emergency room in Carson City, Nevada. So the birthday mountain climb got delayed. I personally think he drilled his hand just to avoid a grueling 11 hour hike straight up a mountain.

Next up is a research trip abroad. As I wind up one book, there's always another in the works.  I can't tell much about where I'll be going or what I'll be researching, but I'll try to post a few pictures (though I'm going to refrain explaining any details). How's that for mysterious? Some of you have already ferreted out a few tidbits from a single cryptic entry on the web. For more complete details, stay tuned.

Gone fishin' for more stories

Oh, and because of the trip, I'll be a bit slow in keeping up with Twitter, Facebook, or responding to e-mail, but I'll be back up to speed ASAP.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend!

Jim

Your books are soooo awesom! They are like a drug and I'm delightfully addicted.

Your books are a fun addition! I'm glad my friend introduced us.

Have an excellent time on your trip. Don't forget to have a good time, I know some of it's about work but do some playing, too. I'm listening to Judas Strain on audio CD right now and I've gotta say that this book has bumped Amazonia out as my favorite book. As I'm a scientist, I love the detail. Thanks for the great job! Just wanted to say thiank you, for the most wonderful summer. I started reading your books in June and all that's left is Skull King's Shadow. Just love the Sigma series, and t... well, so far ... all your books! lol You are truly blessed with a fantastic skill and imagaination. I am taken with the information at the back of the books, fact or fiction (so to speak). I appreciate all the research that goies into your books. Have a great time on your trip!

My only disappointment in your books is that Mom hasn't been alive since 1999 to read them. My joy in us sharing our favorite parts (and most disappointments) in all we read is a thing of the past. But you remind me why I proudly proclaimed for years (starting at at 7) that I wanted to be an archeologist. Naturally I was encouraged to take up something with a better chance of producing income :p But I love your books for the way you weave fact into fiction. I usually don't save "Best Sellers" - I trade them in for more books ;) But I do indeed save yours - and I read them more than once. I also shamelessly press them on friends (and acquaintances) who are looking for an excellent read. I complain loudly when they do not bring them back :p I am somewhat mollified when they tell me they passed it on to another reader. (Read that as "I love books too much to deprive anyone of a great one.") Anyway - I've never left a comment on an authors' page before - thank you for prompting me to do so immediately after reading Doomsday. It may get lost in the shuffle, or your life, but I know what I said, and said what I meant. That's enough.

Why haven't your books made into movies? Especially the Sigma Series. Indiana Jones is dull in comparison. We met at Oakmont, Pa during the Crystal Skulls movie. I found you pacing the hall waiting for the movie to end and we talk. I bought your Map of Bones and the Indiana Jones and the Crystals Skulls. You were kind enough to signed the books. I enjoy reading the Map of Bones and like the end where you make reference to your research materials. I am going to read the books you made reference too. Sincerely, Michelle D. Hitchman

Belated Happy Birthday. I must say that I am a big fan of all your books. I am currently reading Ice Hunt and is the last one among your older books. I have bought Last Oracle, which would be my next read. Doomsday Key is still not available in India. I must add for the benefit of other Indian readers that I have been lucky to get hold of all the books in one of the airports or other in India. Happy Travelling!!!

Hi James: I started reading your books this last June. I stumbled upon Last Oracle in the bookshop at Vancouver International Airport , while my fiance and I were waiting for our flight, whose departure for Philippines had been delayed 4 hours. We were going to get married in the Philippines, so I didn't get around to reading the book until we returned from our honeymoon. I have got to say that I found it fast paced, exciting and fantastical all in one. Immediately after reading Last Oracle, I went to our nearest bookstore and gobbled up what ever James Rollins books I could find. My wife, is also a big fan and she is trailing me by one book, and so we sometimes discuss some of the plot lines and conspiracies. Continue the good writing. I hope you don't plan on killing of the Sigma force series anytime soon:) One of those big wig film makers should consider making a movie series out of some of your books. I think it would make great entertainment. Regards, Hansel & Jenny
