The Newest Comic Book Hero? Maybe not.
Saturday, December 19, 2009
I thought I'd share a hilarious (and definitely "outside the box") promotion from HarperCollins up in Canada. They've started a serialized comic book featuring various authors. The first issue featured one of my favorite writers Christopher Moore. The second issue features yours truly. And as I'm an avid comic book fan (having over 10,000 comics in my collection at one time), to be rendered into a comic book character is both cool and sort of disturbing. Here's the cover art to the issue.

The comics were sent to booksellers up in Canada as a promotion for Altar of Eden (thus all the weird animals in the comic), but you can read the issue on-line by clicking here or by following this link and clicking on each page to enlarge it. (http://www.theliterates.ca). My favorite part of the story: the Croco-Duck. Apparently the scriptwriter of the comic must have read Amazonia, which featured the infamous piranha-frog. I'm still waiting for that particular book to be made into a movie...just so I can see the McDonald's movie tie-in: "But a Happy Meal, get a free plushy piranha-frog for your kid!"
Anyway, I'll also be getting a handful of these comics in the next couple weeks. I'm going to randomly select names from my newsletter list and send out free copies. I also have a few surprise give-aways to pass out over the next couple months. Rather than running "contests," I'm going to continue passing out freebies over the next year to those on the list: UK editions of various books, audio editions, etc. If you're already on the newsletter list, then you're already eligible. If you're not, click here to sign up. (link to newsletter sign-up page)
What else has been going on? I just got back from Oregon where I signed 4000 copies of Altar of Eden that will be distributed at Costco locations around the western states. It was quite the mass signing, and THANKS to everyone at the Ingram distribution center in Roseburg for making that run so smoothly. Those 4000 copies got signed over the course of 5 hours. For those good with math, that's a book signed every 5 second for those five hours. By about 4 hours into the signing, I actually began to get motion sick. I plunged my hand into an ice bucket at the hotel that night. So if you pick up a signed copy at Costco, you know the story behind that signature!
I also saw Avatar last night at an IMAX 3D showing. I'm a huge fan of James Cameron (going back to his directorial debut in 1981 of Piranha II: The Spawning...probably the inspirational source of my piranha-frogs now that I think about it). So I couldn't wait to experience his new 3D technology. I don't want to give any spoilers concerning this movie. So my review is one word: Wow.
Okay, that's about it here. Speaking of newsletters, I'll be sending one out this week in regards to Altar of Eden...and about Christmas at the Rollins household!
Have a great holiday!
Jim

Hi Jim, I read your book Amazonia recently and loved it. I saw Avatar last night and couldn't help but notice some similarities between the lost tribe in your book and the Navi especially the tree which has the power to heal by sinking its roots into a person.

How cool! Isn't that every girls or boys dream when they are young to be a part of a comic book, how exciting for you. I've been waiting for free time to go to the movies, wanting to see Avatar or 2012, knowing nothing really of either but I think I'll take your review for my decision. Merry Christmas! :)

Hey James! LOVE your books. I discovered them about two years ago and haven't stopped reading since. My favorite are the SIGMA series but I read all of them. I can't wait to read Altar of Eden. I wanted to be a vet but ended up being a lawyer. Go figure. In any event, I noticed your upcoming book signings do not include New York. As such, I think you should send copies of the comic book to some of us from New York on your list to make up for the oversight. What do you think?

Agree with an earlier post. As I sat through Avatar, I kept thinking that I saw this somewhere before, then boom. Amazonia. I read it back around '03 and it stuck with me. They were both so similar that it made Avatar predictable. I don't know but it looks way too coincidental. Makes you say "Hmmmmm?" Jim, what's your take?

I went to purchase Altar of Eden at Costco and I was thrilled to find a box of autographed copies! Thank you for your many hours with pen in hand and for sharing the story.

I too went to see Avatar in 3D and really enjoyed it, however I agree that the plot borrows many ideas from Amazonia.

Dear Mr Rollins and other who read this blog I saw "Avatar" last night and had read "Amazonia" a few months back I kept telling my wife that the tree idea was borrowed and she asked me which one came first I guess it was your book. There is one thing you may note that the concept of "mother tree" is not new - In Hindu Myth there is a tree called the " Kalpa Viruksha" meaning the tree of , wish-fulfilling divine tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalpavriksha) Like the posts above I am glad that many have actually noted the similarity here. Dear Jim, I had a chance to read your amazing novel - Amazonia - very recently. As reflected by others, I was surprised to note similarities with the recent "Avatar" movie. I have posted my views in my blog @:http://bhaarthi.blogspot.com/ Looking forward to read you other creations soon.

I just read Amazonia, enjoyed it very much. I have to agree that whoever wrote Avatar also seems to have read and enjoyed Amazonia. I appreciate all kinds of writing. For instance, just before going onto my current James Rollins' kick, I'd read The Boy with the Cuckoo Clock Heart, by a French author Matius (ERR!) and Parrot and Olivier Come to America by Peter Carey. Before that M.C. Beaton and King Lear and The Lost Books of the Odyssey. To sum up, I read all over the blasted map and I have NEVER read anybody who can pace a novel like you can. Tim Dorsey comes close, but, wow. I have read two of your novels and found it almost impossible to put the things down. Moreover, I felt at times as if I were moving so fast I might trip at any moment and break my neck. These books are the coolest, heart-in-the-throat thrill ride at the fair . . . the ones with the longest lines. Thanks!

Mr. Rollins: I have recently 'discovered' your books. They are so much fun and, at the same time, educational. I'm reading the SIGMA series now, one after the other, each in one sitting (yes 400 page books in one sitting!!!) and have already preordered the one due out later this month - it's going to be my New Year's Eve book. I so enjoy your books that I also bought them for my husband for his kindle, as he prefers reading in that manner. Just wanted to say thank you thank you for being such a great storyteller. I may just have to bring my dogs up to Sacramento to your veterinary service just so I can shake your hand! Great job, you are a consumate storyteller! Most sincerely, Cynthia Rosiek
