Temple Grandin on HBO

Friday, February 05, 2010

Clairedanes, Temple Grandin

I wanted to give everyone a head's up about a biopic premiering on HBO this Saturday (Feb. 6th).  The feature is about veterinarian named Dr. Temple Grandin  I used a quote from her and interviewed her in preparation for writing my novel, The Last Oracle. Here's the quote, which was basically the core theme of the novel:

If by some magic, autism had been eradicated from the face of the earth, then men would still be socializing in front of a wood fire at the entrance to a cave.

That book dealt with autism, and how such a condition can create a rare individual who looks at the world in an entirely new light--and with such insight, change the world. Dr. Temple Grandin is such an individual. Watch the special and you'll know what I mean. Her insight into animal intelligence and communication have altered the food industry. Her books are international bestsellers. I've read every words she's written. The books are brilliant: Animals in Translation, Thinking in Pictures, Animals Make Us Human. The HBO biopic has already received a 4-star review in USA Today. I've already got my TIVO set to record it.

Also, of course, Super Bowl Sunday is almost upon us: I'm already wearing my New Orleans Saints wristband (Thanks for sending them, June!)

Have a great weekend!

Jim, thank you for sharing this. She is indeed an amazing individual. I will try to watch it. Enjoy Super Bowl. I am Belgian and still don't understand the game! But the commercials are fun to watch. Gabriella

This is totally awesome and yes, Temple Grandin is not just an amazing person but also she shows that people with autism can be contributors to society rather than be branded as burdens to society and oddballs just because they see the world in a different light.

I'm very excited to see the HBO special about Dr Grandin. Her work with animals as well as her autism activism is truly an example of a resilient spirit. On another note, I think her doctorate is in Animal Science, not veterinary medicine. Finally, I'm sorry to say this, but I have to root for the Colts...

Dr. Temple Grandin is not a veterinarian. She has her degrees in animal science.

As a charter member of the Who Nation I was thrilled to see the Saints bracelets on your wrist. Your books are fantastic.

I've read articles about Dr. Grandin, and she is indeed an extraordinary woman. Question for Anna Merrit. Exactly how does one become a "charter" member of the Who Dat Nation. I thought every New Orleans Saint's fan living in Louisiana was automatically a member of the Who Dat's.

This sounds interesting! Will watch the special (and The Who during half time!)

oops, yes, she's not a veterinarian...she holds a doctorate in Animal Science. Watched the show last night. Great performances all around. Inspiring. And how great was that game!

I, too, rooted for the Saints, loved some of the commercials, think Temple Grandin is brilliant, and found Altar of Eden to be exquisite! What book(s) are you working on now? I am eager for the next adventure to begin.

See you tonight in Roseville. 'Temple' meant a lot to me and my wife because we are raising an autistic child, (23yrs)and her story explained to us the reasons my son acts the way he has. His autism is much more severe than hers but the habits are the same.
