The Good news and the Bad

THE GOOD NEWS
The cat’s out of the bag, courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter and several other blogs. The Sigma series has been optioned for film by the award-winning producer, Dino De Laurentiis. His production company produced such luminary works as Frank Herbert’s Dune, the disturbing Blue Velvet, and the classic Three Days of the Condor.
And the incredibly good news, Dino didn’t want a story you had seen before. He insisted on a completely new storyline for the big screen. I think you can imagine how excited I am to be able to craft a unique, film-ready story for Dino and company…with hopefully more to follow.
Of course, far more details will come, but for now click here to read more about it.
AND THE BAD
Due to a squeezed schedule, the publication of The Devil Colony will be pushed off until next summer (June 2011). I was disappointed to learn this, but it was not totally unexpected. Publishers like to have manuscripts hitting an editor’s desk about a year before it is due to be published. The reason for that long lead-time is to help in promotion, marketing, and getting Advanced Readers Copies to reviewers.
Writing two books a year (and three last year), I’ve slowly been eating into that lead-time. It’s been shortening from 12 months, to 9, to 6. I turned in Altar of Eden only 4 months before it was due to be published. And this year with protracted family health issues, I simply wasn’t going to catch up.
Plus The Devil Colony is a huge and pivotal storyline, and I certainly did not want to rush a story of this magnitude. So the move allows the publisher to get back into a proper marketing sequence and allows me the elbowroom to dive deeply into the history and science of The Devil Colony and to craft the most exciting entry in the Sigma series to date.
So yes, the move of Devil Colony is disappointing, but that does mean I will have THREE books out in 2011:
Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx (Spring)
The Devil Colony (Summer)
and a secret book that is going to shock a lot of people (Winter)
And don’t forget the paperback of The Doomsday Key is out – with a teaser to tide you over for The Devil Colony—and the paperback edition of Altar of Eden will be out this winter.
Also be watching Twitter and Facebook for random updates as I take brief breaks from my writing den!
For more consistent news, trivia and giveaways, though, head over to @ThrillersRockT. This twitter stream is run by a huge fan and a long-time friend. Basically if anything is happening in my world, she knows it, and sometimes to my embarrassment, she will tell you about it!
So remember, while there will be a bit of a delay at the moment, new and exciting titles are going to come hard and fast! Until then, THANKS for all the years of support!

The book delay is sad news indeed; however the movie news has me incredibly excited! There are a shortage of good adventure movies these days, and one of your stories would fill that void perfectly!
Name: Ron Soll Date: 2010-07-05
Sad news indeed. However as always I will be patient. In the end the wait will be well worth it as usual.
Name: preetham chengappa Date: 2010-07-05
Sad news bout the delay but then the good news is much more greater that the wait will not matter.
Name: Robert Krzeski Date: 2010-07-05
Alas...all good things come to those who wait. :-)
Name: Kimberly Unger Date: 2010-07-05
Sad news about the pushback, but I am sure it will be worth the wait! Keep us posted on the Hollywood Process, I'm sure we would all love to hear about how different it is from the novel writing! -ekim

I'd rather have the best book you can write than one that's rushed to meet a deadline, so no problems from me :) The movie sounds very exciting! Will you be going back to before the first Sigma story or just try and introduce the familiar characters to the moviegoing public as they story progresses?
Name: Chris Date: 2010-07-05
Great news about the movie! I cannot tell you how often I think, "Sheesh...when is someone going to make this into a movie?!" when I'm reading your books! Congratulations!
Name: Alan Date: 2010-07-06
You sure have a lot on your plate. Just make sure to make time for yourself to be able to enjoy life & play!

Great news about the movie. As Chris has pointed out, many a time I have also wondered when someone would make a movie out of your books. I have still got The Doomsday Key to enjoy though which I am going to savor :)
Name: Lisa Date: 2010-07-06
I am so excited to finaly get a move made by my favorite author. What has take Hollywood so long? Congratulations! We who are true to our Sigma will wait patiently for the next book to arrive. Take all the time you need!
Name: LinJoi Date: 2010-07-06
Being an avid, maybe even rabid fan of yours, the pushback for the Sigma book is WELCOMED. I love those characters too much to see anything of what you craft of Sigma, rushed. The movie. So long as you've got a header into it, I'm all for it. How drastically different will it be?
Name: Eliendriel Date: 2010-07-06
I have to agree that the movie news sent chills down my spine! A whole new story in the Sigma world to unfold before my very eyes? I cannot wait! :) I can, however, wait for the new book since I know you'd never settle for less than your usual high quality standards, and because re-reading the rest of the Sigma series is so much FUN!
Name: Allison brennan Date: 2010-07-06
Definitely great news and bad news. I know how hard it is to write on a tight schedule. I'm glad you're not sacrificing a quality story and us readers will be the beneficiaries. Family always comes first, so your priorities are straight. I will, however, miss you at thrillerfest.

Excellent news on the movie opportunity. "secret book that is going to shock a lot of people"--finally, your autobiography in haiku.
Name: Sheila English Date: 2010-07-06
Fantastic news about the movie! Big congratulations there!! Sorry we'll miss you at ThrillerFest. I hope things are going better for you and your family. No matter when the new books comes out I'll be buying it!
Name: Kristine Archer Date: 2010-07-06
GREAT NEWS! My Mom and I just spent the weekend wondering why nobody in Hollywood was making a Sigma movie and then spent about two hours deciding who should play each character! I'm disappointed I won't be up all night in August reading Devil's Colony but it's going to be the worth the wait. We're very happy for you, Jim. It's about time the movie industry realized what we fans have known for years .. Your books are the BEST!
Name: George Scott Date: 2010-07-06
We will wait for perfection, take your time
Name: Carol McManus Date: 2010-07-06
WOW! Movie option...how cool is that. So do you get to oversee the screenplay? Like everyone else, I'm disappointed that the new book release is delayed, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait. Look forward to seeing you this week at ThrillerFest. Carol
Name: Joy Kemp Date: 2010-07-06
Excellent news about film. Whilst I'm disappointed about the book, like the others, I'm sure it will be worth waiting for, and fully appreciate that family must always come first. Congratulations, and all the best. Joy
Name: Susan Miller Date: 2010-07-06
Can't wait to see what you come up with for a screenplay and who will be cast to fill the shoes of Gray and his team. Bummed about the new book delay, but hey - what can you do? It will be that much more exciting when it is released.
Name: Kim Beaty Date: 2010-07-06
I can't wait for the movie! I can't wait for the books either!! I am so very proud of you, what fantastic news! I will say this - I am very happy you are doing a completely new story line for the sigma force movie. In my opinion, there is nothing worse than reading a book and having the movie butchered, and nothing at all like the book. Congratulations Jim!
Name: jodi barck Date: 2010-07-06
i have been saying for years we need to se some of your books turn into movies. my first choice would have been ice hunt!! ice hunt for sure. but an original story about sigma force is going to be awesome. good luck!!
Name: Tom Stodola Date: 2010-07-06
Finally, a movie!!! I am sure they wanted a new story so those of us who know your stories won't be complaining that they changed the story and messed it up (Cussler's "Sahara"). Congratulations.
Name: Karmen Date: 2010-07-06
and a secret book that is going to shock a lot of people* you call this *bad news*???? :P cant wait for the movie (I hope they make it real detailed and realistic :D), can wait for the new books cos I havent read all the existing one's yet anyways! Right now devouring Black Order. :)
Name: Casey Randolph Date: 2010-07-06
Very excited about a Sigma movie, but disappointed about Devil Colony being pushed. I was looking forward to reading it next month. Can't wait to see who they cast for the Sigma team!
Name: Stephanie Timiney Date: 2010-07-06
I am sad that I don't get my new Sigma fix this summer, BUT I agree that a rush job is not a good thing and am happy that you pushed it back for that purpose! As far as the movies go, I am ECSTATIC! FINALLY! At first I was a little upset to see that they insisted on a completely new story for the film, but quickly realized what a blessing that is to us die hard fans! No complaining about how they changed something or didn't get something right! So a whole new story is a win-win! I hope to see Seichan in this film!
Name: Joy Allen Date: 2010-07-06
I have loved all your books and know that I can purchase them with the assurance that the story will be excellent and absorbed in very little time! Waiting longer for the next one will be hard but I intend to while away the time picking stars for your movie...lol Congratulations on the movie deal...I know the movie will have the same great standards your books do! Joy
Name: wendy Date: 2010-07-06
yes is sad news on the book, but the movie thing is awesome!! wish they would of made Map of Bones into a movie, think it would of been an awesome one!! but im excited for the books coming out!
Name: Vila Deuel Date: 2010-07-06
I'm even more excited now about reading Devil Colony! Waiting for it will be hard, but the final product will be worth every second of that wait! Again, congrats on the movie deal! Vila
Name: Marianne Date: 2010-07-06
Congratulations on the movie deal! I am so excited!! Sad to hear about The Devil Colony but hey, if it means you having a chance to go over it and add more depth, I'm all for it.
Name: Scott Hanson Date: 2010-07-06
I sure wouldn't mind that mystery book bringing back Jack Kirkland and the crew of the Deep Fathom. Congrats on the movie deal Jim. :)
Name: Mary Ann Date: 2010-07-07
Great news about the film deal!!! As for the delay in publishing, sorry to hear it. But for me personally, it will work out. I am two books behind and it will give me time to catch up! I always buy them as soon as they are out, but got behind in reading. I'm also a couple behind on Preston & Child books. I read NOTHING for the year following my divorce... Maybe I can catch up completely so I can anxiously anticipate new publications with everyone else!!!
Name: Sunday Petto Date: 2010-07-07
Congratulations on the film deal. As always there needs to be balance so waiting will just make the chance to read The Devil Colony that much more exciting when it comes out.
Name: Antoine Date: 2010-07-08
grrr. Very sad about the book as I was looking forward to it for my summer vacation. On the other hand, totally thrilled about the movie deal. Congratulations !

I was hoping to get your new book signed this year plus my hardcover copies of Subterranean, but I can wait. Great that your material will become movies. Yea I'm guy who was at last years' Cussler convention and brings bags of books for you to sign, I've given some of them to my friends that like your work, who doesn't.
Name: Susan R Date: 2010-07-10
Dino has also done some big flops - let's not forget King Kong Lives, Red Heat, Fire Starter, Silver Bullet, Maximum Overdrive, to name a few (OK, I admit I worked on all of these in that long ago past). You should be able to retain some artistic control since you're doing a new screen play... Like you pointed out, a few of his movies were quite good! Here's hoping for the best.
Name: JD Eisner Date: 2010-07-12
MOVIE: Great news. It was the Sigma Six series that got me interested in your writing. But beware - Dino has a checkered past; make sure he does not twist your story and characters beyond recognition. BOOK DELAY: Not so bad...some of us havent gotten to reading everythig you have written yet...anticipation is good LIFE: Priceless. Take care of yourself and your family and dont get get so enveloped in work that you miss 2010
Name: Jordan Date: 2010-07-13
So while the movie thing is awesome, and I'm very curious to see how that turns out, my overall mood at the end of this posted is bummed. No new book this year, possibility of the movie not being as awesome as the books are in my mind, and you're having family health issues!! :( Will definitely be praying for you in this very hectic time! Best of luck with everything, and I'm sure Devil Colony will be worth the wait!! :)
Name: Ferry Date: 2010-07-13
Bad news that the book will be delayed. But, I'm very excited, so much about the movie. Brad new, new story, I think that wiil be so great. I'm sure you can do that...
Name: txtiff425 Date: 2010-07-14
Oh my goodness. I heard about the movie on Twitter and immediately thought WHO WILL THEY CAST!!!!! It's so exciting!
Name: Pearl Date: 2010-07-15
Sad to hear that your book will not be released this August.. I cannot even wait to read the next Sigma book "The Devils Colony". I've already read all of them except the first one (Sandstorm).. it all thrills me.. I really love Seichan character (that is just my comment =)) and about the movie, i really love to see "Map of Bones" in movie.. action full of mystery.. hope to see that in theaters soon..
Name: Christina Date: 2010-07-15
I am THRILLED about the movie! I can't wait to see my favorite characters come to life. I always seem to be disapointed with book to movie reworks, but your characters are so rich in personality, I'm sure that will shine through :) Hopefully, you will retain edit/rewrite ability with the screenplay. Regardless, congratulations, and enjoy yourself... you deserve it!!!
Name: Tracey Cannon Date: 2010-07-16
Fabulous news about the movie deal. I remember when you were here in New Orleans signing Altar of Eden you discussed upcoming meetings in Hollywood. How exciting this process will be. As most Rollins fans can agree, as much as we want new material every year (I would take new material every day if I could), sometimes you have to be patient and wait for the good stuff. I myself cannot wait for a sequel to Altar of Eden. Please do not forget that the premiere of the book should be in New Orleans. I have now read everything and honestly cannot pick a favorite. They are all sooooooo goooooood!!!!!!
Name: Maricarmen Beltran-Garcia Date: 2010-07-16
I am very happy and excited about the movies. Nevertheless, the news about Devil's Colony delay is extremely dissapointing, I have been bugging my favorite B&N customer service guy here in Fort Lauderdale for weeks.... Guess it will be a boring summer after all.
Name: Jacquie Fanthom Date: 2010-07-18
All I can say to the Movie option is "About Time!" Congratulations I'm sure the storyline will be as good if not better than the books :) The bad news isn't so bad for me, at least it gives me chance to catch up on the series and the last 2 or 3 that I haven't been able to get yet (UKstuff).
Name: Melissa B Date: 2010-07-19
Aaaaahhhhh! I have been blazing through Sigma again in preperation for The Devil Colony and now I am going to have to wait for it. I guess that just means I get to read it all again come Spring!!! I am so happy for you and excited about the Sigma movie. I think it is great that you are giving us a new story, sometimes books don't translate to film well and that would be a shame. Congrats and thank you for sharing Sigma with the world!
Name: Jonathan Littlejohn Date: 2010-07-21
Dam summer 2011 is there any chance it might be sooner and hell yess on the movies hope they dont chop them up too badly. oh well geuss stephen hunter will have too hold me over till next summer read all your books so now just bored waiting for something new from you.
Name: L Date: 2010-07-21
Thanks for keeping us informed and sharing the joy, agony and defeat. Remember down translates to a better up. Pleased to hear you are keeping artistic control for the movie, that clarification really sheds brand new light--and hope! Keep walking steadfast...looking forward to hearing of the Sigma activities next spring. So does shocking translate to creepy, fearful, and horrific for the holidays?
Name: Nancy Hall Date: 2010-07-23
I am new to the 'Simga' series (I was given book 1 in the series by a VERY good friend and can I just say a BIG thank you to Reggie as I am so hooked!!!!). I have just read back to back every book up and including (Finished last night) The Last Oracle. Can I just say...OMG!!!!! The characters are just as important to me as the story line. What Monk has gone through....incredible!!!! I can't wait to start the next one. It is such a shame I have to stop reading to go to work. So looking forward to the film with great trepidation. And is there any chance of you James coming to England.... Better still, to Norfolk.... Even Better, to RAF Marham??? Please say YES!!!!!!
Name: jarid p Date: 2010-07-25
I discovered your writing by chance walking through the library last year and have been HOOKED ever since. I love Sigma series, it has everything i want in a book:action, history, mythology, military, teams. Thats why this post made me so incredibly happy and sad at the same time. A Sigma Movie but no new book until 2011? Tears of joy and pain man. Keep up the incredible work. You single-handedly have lit a fire under me to read
Name: Kat Date: 2010-07-27
I am so THRILLED!! I've always been telling my friends and my partner how I wish to see the Sigma team on screen!! Now it's going to come TRUE!! Gosh!! I can't wait... But then, health and family should still come first. Don't overkill your brain cells :) Cheers, Kat

I'm very excited for the fact that Sigma Force is going to be made into a movie! Is it going to be kind of a prequel to the events of Sandstorm, or more of an alternate storyline entirely? I'm curious to know! In regards to "The Devil Colony" being pushed back until next year, I will admit that I am saddened by the delay, but from what you've said about the novel and with how awesome each of the other books have been, it promises to be worth the wait! I hope that you and your family are doing better now, and I can't wait for the movie to come out! (When does it, by the way?) Thank you! Devon
Name: Mef0 Date: 2010-07-31
i can wait for the Devil colony as long as there's a movie coming! Congratz bout that! I've been wanting to see about a sigma movie for years!
Name: Mef0 Date: 2010-07-31
Forgot to ask - are you going to publish a book with the movie storyline?
Name: Andrew Date: 2010-08-12
Congratz on the Movie deal!! I'm casting my vote for either Kevin McKidd or Daniel Craig as Commander Grayson Pierce!! =)
Name: Dan Meman Date: 2010-08-19
Dear James, I'm disappointed about the delay for the book. Still, I'm sure it will make for an amazing story. Now the film. I would love to be a part of the film when it goes before the cameras :) Please! I'm confident I can play PIerce or even Kokkalis :) Ah, one can only dream.
Name: R T Date: 2010-09-07
Love your books, have read the whole Sigma Series and have just a couple more to read, am currently reading Excavation and loving it! In a way I'd love to see the origional story from the books brought to film but at the same time having a new storyline will be great since we know what happens in the books. I hope that new actors are used, someone completly new for the characters. I think, for me anyway, it would ruin the film having familiar faces in it. Grayson should be a new to the scene actor someone we get to know over the course of the film. No doubt there needs to be plenty of CGI but hopefully it won't be over done and we'll get to know the characters well on screen just like we do in the books. Am in the middle of trying to get Subterranean and Deep Fathom they're the last two books I have yet to read and so looking forward to them. Was supposed to keep Excavation to read on my hols but couldn't wait.! Keep on writing, and thanks for letting Bane live! So often dogs get killed off in books and movies love the fact that Bane survived.

Condolences to the De Laurentiis family. Hope your film work stays on-track.
Name: David V. Halpern Date: 2010-12-02
I'd e-mailed you some time ago and hadn't heard anything back, so I thought I'd check your site. Sorry about the delay on Devil's Colony-----Mandi ( my co-worker at Barnes & Noble) and I will just have to sublimate until next year. Hope everything is OK with you and your family. I know how health problems in a family can mess up your head. My 6-year-old granddaughter just had relatively simple artery surgery last week, and no one in the family could think of anything else for several weeks. Our thoughts are with you.
Name: J. Eibel Date: 2010-12-23
I found you while looking for another author to get into, since I read all of SK's books, and a few others... I seen "Black Order" on the shelf and pick it up. I read a few pages in the middle and was immediately captivated!! I bought it and 6 months later, I rolled through the rest of your books. I absolutely love your books. I am fixing to start Jake Ransom and the Skull Kings Shadow (didnt know it even existed until now). I am jittery with anticipation for the new Sigma book... cannot wait. The movie is good news indeed... just dont let them take away from the books. Nothing botches things up worse than that!! Keep up the good work. take some time to appreciate family... take a break!!

Just finished reading The Devil Colony and, as per usual, didn't want it to end!! So very glad to see that Gray and Seichan seem to be getting closer - a little happiness is long overdue for her and they are great together. Looking forward to some more intense moments between the two of them and happy endings on that score!!
