The USO to Carry Out “Operation Thriller” on U.S. Troops
Stationed in Persian Gulf
Five of Today’s Most Celebrated Thriller Writers to Embark on Week-Long USO Tour
to Combat Zone in Fall 2010
WHAT: USO Tour Featuring Bestselling Authors from International Thriller Writers (ITW), the nation’s first and only professional organization devoted solely to thriller authors:
Steve Berry (The Paris Vendetta, The Charlemagne Pursuit and The Venetian Betrayal, among others)
David Morrell (First Blood, in which Rambo was created, and The Brotherhood of the Rose)
Doug Preston (The Monster of Florence and Relic, which later became a number one box office hit)
James Rollins (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the Sigma Force series including The Devil Colony)
Andy Harp (A Northern Thunder)
WHEN: Fall 2010
WHERE: Washington, D.C. and Persian Gulf
Note: Due to security reasons, the countries and tour dates cannot be released at this time.
WHY: In Fall 2010, some of the nation’s New York Times best-selling thriller authors will deploy to the Persian Gulf on a week-long USO tour to visit and uplift troops. The tour, fittingly entitled Operation Thriller, will kick off with a special visit to Washington, D.C., where the group will visit with troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center. The group will then fly to the Persian Gulf to talk fiction, inspire, spread cheer and, most importantly, show their heartfelt gratitude.
Participating in what will be their first USO tour, the authors will visit multiple posts, sign autographs, pose for photos and distribute advance copies of their upcoming novels.
From July 7-10, 2010, the authors attended ThrillerFest V, a four-day celebration of thriller books organized by the International Thriller Writers, where they announced their upcoming USO tour.

James Rollins and Doug Preston REALLY REALLY need to come to the USS HARRY S TRUMAN if you're going to be in the "neighborhood" aka Persian Gulf. Two of my all time favorite authors. I'm going to be thoroughly dissapointed if I don't get to meet these fine gentlemen. People fly out to this carrier to visit all the time, no reason you guys couldn't. You better not just go visit all the ground troops, there's plenty of book reading fanatics underway as well!

That's righteous! Good Idea! Big pat on the back. It's about time we did something nice like this for our troops! They'll love it!

This is a fabulous idea! I hope as many soldiers as possible will be able to meet their favorite authors.

Fantastic idea! James Rollins has a huge fanbase among the services, me included. Nothing like reading "Sandstorm" in a real one!

Jim: I think that remembering our troops in this fashion is an absolutely wonderful way to show they are cared about and supported! One thinks of everyone from the singers to movie stars to politicians to even wrestling entertainers visiting, but this is probably more or less a first: authors! And what a bang-up slate: Rollins, Morrell, Berry, Preston, all authors I read religiously and with the utmost enthusiasm! I am not familiar with Mr. Harp, but I will make it a point to check his work out as well. Such a distinguished & thoughtful group needs a good reading, coast to coast & beyond, I'd say (& I mean their books, not the "riot act"!). I hope many other authors will profit by your fine example! You are to be commended, one & all! With admiration & thanks, Jim M. Gau Hancock, MI

Are you serious? I just missed your book signing in NorCal due to deployment last year and now you are going on USO tour now that I am home....I cant win for losing...But I will say you and Steve Berry let me escape and got me through some rough times. Thanks and I hope you have a safe and uneventful trip.

A simple thank you is not enough, but will have to do. Coming from someone who served in the Persian Gulf, I know how much the tour will mean to our servicemen and women. Sometimes books are all we have to help escape the reality of where we are. It almost makes me wish I was back in Afghanistan. Well, okay, not really, but it would have been a wonderful treat! Again, thank you.
