Meteor sonic boom wakes up Sierra Nevada
Monday, April 23, 2012
Okay, it's 8:00am yeseterday, and I'm minding my own business (ie., sound asleep)--when I'm suddenly woken by a huge BOOM. And by huge, I mean, I thought a truck had slammed into the house. Woke the dogs, set the geese on the neighboring lake go screaming into the sky. I lay there remembering something out of The Devil Colony. That book deals with the massive supervolcano under Yellowstone. Scientists say that if Yellowstone ever erupts, it will be the single loudest BOOM ever heard--then everyone dies. Since I was still breathing, I figured Yellowstone remained intact.
Then yesterday evening I discovered the source of that BOOM. It was a meteor. Apparently a fireball was seen streaking across Northern Nevada and burst past Lake Tahoe with a sonic boom. Click here to read the article about it.
I personally think it was a cosmic commentary on my writing. Luckily, their aim was off.
Anyone have a near death experience or thought they were having one?

Wow. That's kind of cool about the meteor. And it was absolutely a cosmic comment about your writing. Near death experiences... I suppose there have been a few, but none as frightening as Linda's. The neighbors in Truchas, NM used to shoot down the hill toward us. Bullets whizzed by randomly until I decided they weren't aiming at me, or they couldn't hit me. ... Hmm.... Wonder if it was a commentary on my writing. :)

I shouldn't leave comments past 10 p.m. :) I meant that the bullets whizzed by, and it was somewhat concerning until I decided they weren't aiming at me, or they couldn't hit me. They did, however, shoot my horse in the foot. The bullet (a .22) split in three fragments. The vet was able to operate, and the foot never bothered my horse again. Vets rock!

Went to Texas to visit my sister. We went to the Comal River to go Tubing. When I came down the chute , my tube shot out from under me. I was then in the water. I am a strong swimmer. However, the pressure of the water coming down the chute made a whirlpool. I was pulled under , vertical in the water I could not reach the surface . My snorkel kit was around my wrist and had floated to the surface. My sister was standing next to the lifeguard, she told him I would be up soon as I was a good swimmer. When I didn't surface she said she was panicked. Looking up I could see the sky ,I was only a foot and a half from the surface .It might have as well been a mile as current had me dead locked. Not able to hold my breath any longer , I inhaled water in a gasp. Pain shot through my chest , drowning is not painless and peaceful. Just as I inhaled the water, I saw the life ring land above me. The lifeguard saw my snorkel kit on the surface and threw it there.Knowing it was my last chance ,I kicked as hard as I could and got my arm through the ring. He pulled me in hand over hand .Then pulled me out turned me over and pushed water out of lungs. He saved my life. The Comal River is dangerous as the current is being driven by a huge waterfall at the end. My advice don't Tube there.
